3D animation has evolved into a high-growth area in the converging production of linear and non-linear audiovisual media (i.e., animated film and visual effects on one hand and digital games on the other). Currently, immersive technologies like Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality open up new artistic spaces and career perspectives for creative media professionals. For the first time in German-speaking countries, a renowned film school and a successful game institute jointly offer a Master’s Course in 3D animation for linear and non-linear media. For graduates, this course will noticeably expand the spectrum of potential fields of work.
The further education Master is designed with a focus on artistic-academic studies. A requirement of the postgraduate program is existing skill in modeling, texturing, lighting and animation, learned, for example, in the context of film, design or architectural studies. As part of the extra-occupational study course, the students will deepen and professionalize their existing knowledge of the 3D process and acquire new knowledge in areas like authorship and experimental work. A particular focus will be on the role of the “Technical Director / Artist” as an interface between artistic design and technical implementation.
A central component of the Master’s program is close integration with the industry. In designing the study program, the CGL and ifs relied on their international network of proven experts. The strong practical and project orientation explicitly promotes job-related learning goals and competencies. Students expand their pre-existing know-how with a rich set of methodical, theoretical and design-practical skills, thus obtaining the necessary competencies to supervise and manage artistic-academic or artistic-commercial projects independently. In this context, the teaching of a general animation literacy is as important as the training of specialized skills related to the complete 3D process.
Addressing an international target group that aims to work in interdisciplinary teams, the course will be taught in English. Both institutes—the Cologne Game Lab and the ifs—have long-standing experience with international study courses (CGL with its Master program Game Development & Research; ifs with its Master programs Serial Storytelling and Digital Narratives).
