Making games is an Artform
in cooperation with the Goethe Institute Sudan in Khartoum, Carmen Johann (Games Researcher at Cologne Game Lab) and Milan Pingel (Master student at the Cologne Game Lab) held a board game workshop with young artists from the area of Khartoum to introduce games as objects of cultural value and expression. The workshop is the kickoff to a long term project with the idea to build up a games community and offer a platform for exchanging ideas with European game designers and artists. Thus, creating new events for the local and international games community and widen the view for interesting cultural concepts.
Under the Title – Making games is an Artform – the workshop gave insights on the status quo of games culture and stated the simple steps to create a boardgame to a certain topic. In a three-day game jam, participants had several practical exercises about game design as a basis for creating their own analog prototypes (board games, card games, games of dice,…). On the last day the self-made games were presented, played and discussed.
After four intensive workshop days, 12 participants have finally received their certificates! Four games were created, two of which are dealing with the education of Sudanese culture and will be worked out by the participants in the future. Our colleagues Carmen Johann and Milan Pingel are very grateful that such a great group of people took part in the workshop. And they would like to thank for the hospitality and cordiality with which they were received! They hope to come back in 2018 to implement our sustainable goal, a digital games workshop!
