First ever Games-Summit NRW

On Wednesday, May 09, Armin Laschet, Prime Minister of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, invited representatives of NRW’s gaming industry to the first ever Game-Summit at the state chancellery in Düsseldorf. The Prime Minister exchanged views on topics ranging from location development to the training and education of young professionals in NRW, in order to derive policies that strenghten the gaming industry in NRW. Cologne Game Lab’s co-directors Prof. Björn Bartholdy and Prof. Dr. Gundolf S. Freyermuth as well as Prof. Odile Limpach, who is the expert for entrepreneurship, have been invited to share their expertise.

In light of the success it was agreed to repeat the summit on an annual basis.

Gaming industry in NRW

With a total of around 700 companies in the gaming industry nationwide, 100 of them are based in NRW. Approximately each fourth game developer is based here, plus around 50 developers’ studios and a dozen publishers. With the Universities of Duisburg-Essen and Paderborn as well as the Cologne Game Lab, the federal state is in leading postition in regard to university education. On top of that the gamescom, being the biggest fair for interactive entertainment worldwide, is also based in Cologne.
