The “Künsterlinnenpreis NRW” 2017 goes to Auriea Harvey (grand prize) and Leonie Wolf (advancement award). The prize is worth a total of 15,000 euros and is awarded this year for the 20th time by the state government and the women’s cultural office NRW. Klaus Kaiser, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture and Science, presented the artist’s prize at the NRW Forum in Düsseldorf on November 10 during Next Level Conference.
The „Künstlerinnenpreis Nordrhein-Westfalen 2017“ supports female game designers who focus on an artistic approach in the realization of digital games. The Cologne Game Lab / TH Köln contributed to the awarding of the prize as a competence partner.
We are delighted and proud that the winner of the advancement award, endowed with 5,000 euros is Leonie Wolf. The Cologne-based designer is a student of Game Design (specialised in Game Arts) at Cologne Game Lab! She impressed the jury with her ability to combine high artistic aspirations with commercial components. The jury states, she works with great accuracy on her projects and, apart from the necessary seriousness, never loses sight of the playful aspects. “Her visual language is always reflected in new facets in all her works, so she creates surprises and confronts her audience with unusual situations that turn her games into interactive, tightly knit and intense experiences,” says the Jury.
The grand prize of the jury, endowed with 10,000 euros, honors the life of Belgium-based artist Auriea Harvey. In the past two decades, the gamedesigner, born in the USA, has presented a comprehensive work in the field of tension between poetry, irritation and play. With her unmistakable style, she has not only fascinated a wide audience, but also inspired and challenged generations of artists both internationally and especially in the European region, as the jury explained. In addition to their always experimental design requirements, Auriea’s artistic work is characterized by her exceptional sense of ‘Zeitgeist’.
